Orizuru Haori

I’ve already posted photos of me wearing this particular item, but it really needs a proper entry to showcase it. Shinei was having a huge sale and I saw this and really fell in love with it. In the photos, it looked like a modern piece – heavy silk, relatively “standard” proportions. When it arrived I was shocked at how old it was it was, evident in the length of both the body and the sleeves, as well as the brightly patterned lining. It’s incredibly lush and thick, and the cranes are so vivid. The lining is also exceptional. I am not generally fond of karako (stylized playing children) but since it’s mostly hidden I am actually quite fond of them in this case. I love the ridiculously vivid linings on vintage haori.

Two Black Pente Haori

I found the two of these as Buy It Now listings from the same seller, waffled between the two for a bit, and finally figured I could save on shipping by getting both. I did not realize from the listings that they were pente (a form of painting on the silk, usually with acrylic), I thought they were modern heat-transferred synthetic. I’m really happy though – I like it when things turn out better than I anticipated.

The first one has a bold design of maple-shaped inserts on geometric designs, and the second one is a more subtle but beautifully painted series of multi-seasonal flowers, and it also has a crossed hawk-feather crest. They both have soft white linings and pretty white and gold himo. They will be great versatile dressy haori, and much more appropriate for dressing older people than most of the ones I currently own. XD

Kasuri wool komon and haori set

A few months back, Amelie wore this set when we went out for shabu-shabu and I commented on how much I loved it and how I’d been wanting one of these matched sets for a while, but never found one that would fit me. Because Amelie is a total sweetheart and a very generous person, she offered the set to me as a late birthday/Christmas present. I couldn’t say no!

I love wool kimono for their versatility, ease of wear, and comfort. They’re wool so they can be nice and warm, but they’re unlined and relatively breezy so they’re comfortable in warmer months too. They’re also typically woven with bold geometric motifs, so they’re seasonless. They’re a great casual addition to any kimono wardrobe.

This one also appeals to my inner ex-goth (if you’re curious to see how I dressed when going out when I was younger, click here or here) due to the black and red colour scheme. What can I say, I’m easily amused.
